You could take anothers day rest and some ibuprofen and see if it's gone in the morning.

Or you could give the run a go and see how you get on. I quite often run with a bit of a lower back ache and it actually helps loosen the muscles, but you're the best judge of your body and what to do for the best.

thanks, i think the back ache comes from the run and as you have rightly noted the run alleviates the ache but it returns within 24hrs....i'm kind of stuck in a cycle. Ibuprofen works, but i don't want to take daily.

hi. I used to get this when I first started running. I found that laying on my back, after the run, with my knees pulled into my chest & rolling my bum & legs (shoulders on the floor) from side to side did seem to stretch out & help my back. but if you go red after a run laying down to do this will make your face redder!!

I only occasionally feel the need to do this now, after a long run, so maybe it is just your back adjusting to these different movements.

hope it gets better. shelley x

Shelley - that's one of the 'approved stretches' in my women's running book!

I think that also working on core strength helps. If your tum is supporting your posture then your back takes less of the strain. It probably means doing something like crunches and reverse crunches, being careful not to use the back muscles at all, or you could try the Callanetics stomach exercises, I know they are on Youtube.

that makes sense. Ive had 5 kids (at one point I had 4 under age of 5) so stomach muscles are definately not what they should be :)

Ive tried pilates but that gives me belly ache for a couple of days afterwards.

what womens running book do you have?

It's called Run for Life by Sam Murphy, but she has a new one coming out soon which is an updated version called Real Women Run. I've found the stretches and exercises very useful and if I leave it out on the bedside table it reminds me to get my gear on and go!

The Callanetics stomach exercises are pretty effective while being gentle on the back. I can do 400 now, but at first I could only do 50.....

hi all, thanks for your super advise. I rested over the weekend, ran last night, performed the "rolling around on my back stretches" which resulted in a tiny amount of back pain last night but by this morning ..none:)))))

p.s. w5r2 i found easier than w5r1 ... me loving this training programme
